Die phantastische Geschichte von Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), einer jungen Frau, die vom brillanten wie unorthodoxen Wissenschaftler Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) von den Toten zurück ins Leben geholt wird. Bella ist hungrig auf das Leben und die Lebenserfahrung, die ihr fehlt. Mit dem verrufenen Anwalt Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) bricht sie zu einem rasanten Abenteuer über die Kontinente auf.
Die literarische Vorlage stammt vom schottischen Autor und Künstler Alasdair Gray (1934-2019), der seine Bücher mit fantasievollen Motiven selbst illustrierte. Der vollständige Titel des Romans lautet: Poor Things. Episodes from the Early Life of Archibald McCandless M.D., Scottish Public Health Officer (1992). "The greatest Scottish novelist since Sir Walter Scott", so Anthony Burgess (Autor von Clockwork Orange) über Alasdair Gray.
From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Poor Things is the best film of Lanthimos’ career and already feels like an instant classic, mordantly funny, whimsical and wacky, unprecious and unpretentious, filled with so much to adore that to try and parse it all here feels like a pitiful response to the film’s ambitions.
A funny, sad, bawdy, beautiful concoction that will haunt and provoke in equal measure.
